On the afternoon of March 22, 2023, the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering invited Liu Chao, Vice President of Haiying Enterprise and alumnus of China Ocean University Class of '97, to give a special lecture entitled "Sonic Waves Serving the Country, Building Dreams in the Deep Blue" to students and faculty. The lecture was hosted by Gao Wei, Vice Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering at China Ocean University, and was attended by undergraduate and graduate students majoring in acoustics, computer science, and electronic information.

Professor Liu first introduced the history of underwater acoustic detection, from Leonardo da Vinci's invention of the ear trumpet in 1490 to the historic advancements made in underwater acoustic technology during World War I, World War II, and post-war period. He then provided a detailed overview of the development of sonar technology in China and highlighted outstanding research achievements by Chinese scientists and academicians in related fields, providing the students with a systematic understanding of the importance of underwater acoustic technology.

The lecture focused on underwater equipment represented by "sonar," systematically introduced the classification and typical application scenarios of underwater equipment, emphasized the vital importance of underwater technology in ocean resource development, marine economic development, ocean information acquisition, marine ecological management, and the maintenance of marine rights and interests. At the same time, the innovative research and development capabilities of domestic and foreign underwater research institutions were compared. Through an intuitive understanding, the current employment status and future development trends of the domestic underwater industry were presented, guiding the students to think about the reality of insufficient basic research and innovative research and development capabilities in China.

To encourage students' enthusiasm and exploration awareness, Professor Liu actively interacted with the students present, patiently answering their questions with his extensive knowledge and experience.
